A Series of Short Plays by Henry Tydeman
Calling Home (Short Play)
This two-hander – the characters are called simply ‘Man’ and ‘Woman’ – takes place in a sort of purgatorial realm. Themes of ageing, regret, and nostalgia are present as the pair alternate between bickering and reassuring each other.
Time and the Rain (Short Radio Play)
Samuel and his mother are in a graveyard. He waits whilst she cleans one of the graves (she is in a wheelchair). They bicker, tease each other, and reminisce about the one who has died, a family member. Later, Samuel wanders off and leaves his mother to give a short monologue, in which she describes her memories. Themes of loss and memory are prevalent, and towards the end, there is some mystery.
Nancy and Jean (Radio Play)
Nancy and Jean are residents of an old people’s home. They’re convinced that they shouldn’t be there, and so one evening they plan to escape. Their exchanges are friendly and earnest. Before and after their escape they talk about their lives: where they used to live, their families, etc. (memory is a central theme). They travel to the house of Jean’s son, Richard, but by that point, there is a strangeness, a new psychological element, a blurring of the line between what is real and what isn’t. There are also themes of regret and loss.
Run time: 1hr 40mins.
