About

All Too Short A Date by Adrian Moss

Brittany. 1982.

19-year-old Peter, driving back to the ferry after working as a holiday courier in Brittany, picks up 21-year-old Lucy, who is hitch-hiking to her new job. As the afternoon passes and despite a spiky and uncomfortable start, a brief romance begins between these two damaged young people.

Peter’s naivety, engendered by his sheltered upbringing, has been replaced by confidence stimulated by his summer’s experiences. Lucy, brought up in a strict Christian household, suffered a breakdown during her first year at university, and is fighting hard against the restrictive morality imposed upon her during her childhood and teens.

From the present day, Old Peter and Old Lucy accompany them, reviewing the day, their younger selves, and their actions.  We’ve all been young; we all have memories of certain days or events that changed us. As an audience, we long to know what happens to these two youngsters during their journey and why Old Peter and Old Lucy have appeared to comment on the events of that day.  An unexpected and shocking ending examines the idea of false memory and inescapable mortality.

Strong language, sexual references, and topics around death are present in this play.
