About

Workshop: Storytelling Through Dance with Leila McQuaid.

Overall Structure

This workshop will focus on learning how to connect your performance through dance. Storytelling in dance is, for the dancer, exploring ways in which our bodies can convey meaning, intent, and interpretation; to perform a narrative or a journey. A dance, like a play, tells a story, with a beginning, middle, and end. If you do not feel like you are a strong dancer, that does not matter at all. Everyone has the ability to tell a story whether that be through words, art, or in this case, dance.

Learning Objectives

  • To learn how to connect to any piece of choreography or movement.
  • Understanding how each movement you perform adds to the story you are telling.
  • The use of breath and how that can help ground and connect us more to a routine.
  • Learn to connect with different rhythms and timings.
  • To leave feeling empowered and ready to tackle any dance/movement audition that comes your way!

Interactive Workshop

  • Warm-up.
  • Learn a short combination in the style of contemporary fusion.
  • Break down the routine and movements and connect a story to the combination-using different exercises to help bring out the story and emotions you want to convey.
  • Repeat the same combination but now with the added layer of communicating your story through the movements.
  • Evaluate the difference between the two performances.

Estimated length Approx 1hr
