About

Workshop: Writing - First Steps with Conor Patrick Carroll

Overall Structure

This workshop is built around a series of exercises designed to tease out the larger narratives and emerging characters from your initial story ideas. You will be asked to enter the workshop with an open mind and willingness to expand on some stories or themes that you are eager to evolve into a more coherent and tangible script. The workshop will utilise tangible examples of well-known stories to contextualise and enhance your understanding of how stories are generated and what could make your idea more robust. The aim by the end of the workshop is for those who take part to gain the confidence and knowledge to tackle a new script and to understand why their story needs to be told. There will be plenty of opportunities to share your findings during the workshop and discussion about the topics will be encouraged.

Learning Objectives

  • For the participants to gain an insight into how stories are developed from an early stage and to coax out of them the original emerging story from their initial idea.
  • For participants to obtain a number of tangible exercises which they can carry out, at their leisure, whenever they are thinking of developing a new idea.
  • To provide relatable and understandable examples which help to unlock the participants understanding of the ideas being explored.
  • To give the participants ample opportunity to discuss their ideas so they have a sense of development through the course of the workshop.
  • To make the workshop an enjoyable experience with a sense of community by encouraging the participants to feedback on each other's ideas and work should they wish to.
  • To provide useful resources for the participants which they can utilise following the completion of the workshop to expand on what they have learned.

Interactive Workshop

  • Participants are asked to enter the workshop with an idea for a story they have (ideally) not started writing yet. They will initially be asked to introduce themselves and their ideas to the group in order to contextualise their learning journey through the workshop.
  • This will be followed by a free-writing exercise to accustom the participants to removing overly critical or judgemental thinking whilst forming creative ideas. They will hopefully carry this practice into the subsequent exercises.  Participants will then be asked to brainstorm a number of different ideas they could write about but this will be with the aim to hone in on one in particular for the purposes of the workshop.
  • Once one idea has been singled out, the participants will engage in a series of stimulating exercises designed to tease out various storytelling elements which could inform their writing process.
  • The workshop will conclude with a summary discussion of the ideas explored and also provide provisional time for any unanswered questions to be addressed.

Estimated length Approx 1hr 30mins
