TRIP is a one-woman satirical thriller that tells the story of Lucy, an idealistic London nine to fiver in her mid-twenties, and her transformation from a frustrated protester into a radical foreign insurgent. TRIP’s chronologically fragmented narrative starts at the moment she steps on an improvised explosive device in a fictionally wartorn Uzbekistan, jumping back and forth between that moment and her journey towards it. Through London office blocks, polluted canals left-wing protests, and the smouldering wreckage of Eurasian battlegrounds, TRIP finally turns inwards, into Lucy herself.
In exploring the gradual transformation of a middle-class woman into a radical foreign fighter, TRIP interrogates the notion of revolution, and the hypocrisies inherent in our neoliberally informed, often romanticised understanding of it. TRIP is fiction, but the conflicts depicted are inspired by real events and political movements.
